Coenzyme Q10 (Co Q10) is also known as ubiquinone or ubidecarenone. It is a fat-soluble substance, present in most eukaryotic cells and is found mainly in mitochondria. It is a component involved in the electron transport chain, aerobic cellular respiration and energy production in the form of ATP.

Coenzyme Q10 (Co Q10) has an antioxidant activity, as it acts as an energy carrier and is continuously transformed by redox from ubiquinone (oxidized form) to ubiquinol (reduced form). Thus, coenzyme Q10 provides protection against oxidation of lipids, proteins, mitochondrial DNA and LDL cholesterol. It also helps regenerate other antioxidants, such as vitamin E.

Coenzyme Q10 (Co Q10) appears to have a neuroprotective effect and is used in large doses as a component that slows the progression of Parkinson's disease and motor neurone disease. It is also thought to help repair DNA in people with Down syndrome, protecting against neurodegeneration leading to premature Alzheimer's-type dementia.
